? ? 1. At the beginning, I was afraid to try writing a poem. 起初,我不敢尝试写诗。 at the beginning起初,开始,相当于at first。 at the beginning of意为“在……的开始”, 后跟名词或代词。 At the beginning of the class, Mr. Lin sang a song. 在这节课的开始,林先生唱了一首歌。

2. so… that …如此……以至……,引导结果状语 从句,that从句中常加情态动词。例如: The TV set costs so much that I can’t buy it. 这台电视机花这么多钱以至于我买不起。

另外,so…that…还可以引导目的状语从句,
“以便”。例如:

He got up so early so that he could catch the early
bus. 他很早起床以便赶早班车。

? so…that引导结果状语从句时有时可以用 “too…to…”及“enough”来改写。例如:

? He is so young that he can’t go to work.
? He is too young to go to work.

? The boy is so strong that he can lift the heavy box. ? The boy is strong enough to life the heavy box.

so…that…引导目的状语从句时有时可以用 in order to 或so as to来替换。例如: He came early so that he could sit in the front of the classroom.

他早来的目的是能坐在教室的前面。
He came early in order to (so as to ) sit in the

front of the classroom.
